My tip: For freediving in the pool, most freedivers prefer the combination of swimming goggles and nose clip to a diving mask. This combination is not only more hydrodynamic, but also promotes the mammalian diving response (MDR) by exposing the face to the water. The main advantage, however, is that pressure equalisation can be performed without having to grasp the nose when diving in the water. This is a great relief, especially for freedivers with sensitive ears, in the event of pressure fluctuations (e.g. when descending before a turn with monofins).

Safety tip: As a freediver, you should always wear clear, untinted masks and goggles to allow the safety diver an unobstructed view of your eyes. The state of a diver’s eyes can quickly indicate whether they are okay, if they are panicking and widening their eyes, or if their eyes are already rolling back due to a loss of motor control (LMC).
