How do you wear a weight belt when freediving?

In freediving, the weight belt is an essential piece of equipment that must be worn correctly to ensure safety and comfort. The weight belt is positioned in such a way that it does not restrict the expansion of the abdomen during full breathing. At the same time, it should not slide upwards towards the chest during descent, especially in the head-up position. This is best achieved by positioning the belt buckle at hip level, i.e. significantly lower than a conventional belt.

A common comparison I often encourage my students to make is to wear the weight belt like a hip-hopper would wear baggy trousers!

Why does a weight belt slip?

The question of why a weight belt slips is justified. Weight belts are usually made of rubber, a material that slips quite well on wetsuits (weight belts made of silicone are more slip-resistant, but cost considerably more). Freedivers with a slim waist and round hips in particular can have the problem that the belt comes to rest on the widest point. If it slides up just a few centimetres, it loses its grip and can slide up to the chest in the upside-down position. When turning round, the belt will then fall downwards, which can be quite uncomfortable.

The solution to slipping lead belts

The solution to slipping weight belts is an adjustable crotch strap. This prevents the weight belt from slipping upwards and holds it securely in position. The adjustable crotch strap is wide, does not cut in and is therefore comfortable to wear. The potential problem that the adjustable crotch strap could prevent the weight belt from being dropped in an emergency is solved by integrating the adjustable crotch strap into the Marseille buckle. Alternatively, if you are wearing a harness with a quick release buckle, you can also hook the crotch strap into the front of the harness. This is a perfect solution against slipping weight belts and helps you to concentrate fully on the freediving experience!
